MENTORS:
MADDUX CATTLE CO.
Maddux Cattle Company —which
includes John Maddux, Jack and Carol Maddux, and Harlow and
Barbara Hill—is an integrated cow-calf operation in
southwest Nebraska. Our rangeland is a combination of sandhills, hard-land canyons, and sub-irrigated meadows along
several creeks. We spring calve, wean early, and intensively
graze cornstalks in the winter. Our calves are weaned on
irrigated grass and are sent to our own feedyard until they are
sold for slaughter. We have practiced for 25 years, a high-
intensity, low-frequency grazing. We graze twice during
the growing season, once during cool season grass period, and
later during the warm season green-up. Limited winter grazing is
done, mainly with replacement heifers. We have experience with
extensive water development, high tensile electric fence, and
various practices to manage drought including early weaning,
limit feeding of cows, cow leasing, and use of
alternative/byproduct feeds. We also have some knowledge of
developing a crossbreeding program, which maintains high levels
of heterosis and is still conducive to high-intensity grazing
with large herds of cattle.
